Another one of the "start with red" series (I never know they are really a series until after.......but it makes sense that they will have the same feel when I paint them at the same time) Again with the big brush and using it really dry along the middle ground to create the feeling of shrub and brush and scrub. Letting it sit and then returning with the simple pale blue-white sky. Busy foreground means a quiet sky for balance. Complicated sky means simple foreground. Sometimes its really that simple.

I changed my header picture to a photo I "stitched" together from a recent sunrise. Inspiration for future paintings........

Another in my practice with newsprint.....liking that the newsprint shows through on the white spaces here. This group is about letting the really wet acrylic paint drip onto and runover the primed newsprint. Yes, using white paint primer for the undercoat and a big brush to slather it on. Let it dry a little and then with applicator bottles (saved from coloring hair) drip the thinned colors onto the primed newpaper. Let it run, pick it up, hold it sideways and rightways and any ways. Put it down and fold the wet paint into the dry parts of the newsprint. Just see what happens. Let it dry. Doesn't take long but I did hang a few pieces of painted newspaper on the clothes line to help them along. Then see what paintingsssss....big or small....show up in parts of the bigger painting.

Mysterious Stillness

Have finally gotten my Etsy storefront up and running on a small scale.

SOOO many paintings hanging around here or stored around here I just have to do something about getting them to market. Starting with some of the landscapes that are from the past year with a lot of texture added. Also listed some of the more subtle landscapes from a few years ago before I hit upon the tissue paper texture for surface interest. Those paintings are strongly influenced by the work of pastel artists. I haven't been a pastelist myself but, boy, I love what a pastelist can do with color.

Finishing the Landscape

This is another of the landscapes that was not so successful so I set it aside (since February) but had been seeing it around while I worked on other projects. After not thinking so hard about it for so long I picked it up the other day and went to work on it. Warming it up with the red and the yellow helped give it more life. Sometimes hard to see in the midst of the painting of it where it could be called finished. I made a video of the finishing......maybe video or photo at each stage is a good idea. A more objective eye to consider whether to continue on with more paint or hold and call it finished......

Here's another video showing me painting.I used primed watercolor paper for this and dried it with a hair dryer between colors just to move things along. I usually have 3 or 4 paintings going at once so I can move around amongst them. By moving on to a second or third painting I can usually look back at the first painting and see much more clearly what direction to go with it. I think I overpainted this one just because I was only working on one and didn't take the breaks from it to step back. Looking at the painting in the video there are several points where I could have stopped and been happy with the painting that was there.....but did not ......soooo on to the next.
